Wisconsin DNR wants to reduce wolf harvest

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Wisconsin wildlife officials want to dramatically scale back this state's third annual wolf hunt.

The Department of Natural Resources plans to ask its board next week to limit the total kill to 156 wolves. Agency officials say they want to slow down after hunters killed 257 wolves last year, six more than their limit. They say they want to gather more information about the impact of last year's harvest on reproduction.

The quota could shrink even further to accommodate the state's Chippewa tribes, which are entitled to 50 percent of the total kill in northern Wisconsin's ceded territory. The tribes oppose hunting wolves, however, and haven't killed one during the first two seasons.

The DNR's board will take up the proposal at a meeting in Milwaukee on June 25.
