Wisconsin Rapids armory moving forward

WISCONSIN RAPIDS, Wis. (AP) -- Plans to replace the Wisconsin Rapids armory, built in 1952, are finally moving forward.

After a nearly two-year delay, state-supported bonding for the $62 million project is included in Gov. Scott Walker's capital budget proposal.

Rep. Amy Sue Vruwink (VROO'-wink) says it's increasingly important that the troops have modern up-to-date facilities. The new readiness center would be larger and include accommodations for technology that currently isn't in the old building.

The Wisconsin Rapids Daily Tribune says the project includes about $2 million in state bonding and $60 million in federal funding.

The capital budget proposal still needs approval from the state's Joint Finance Committee, the Assembly and the Senate as well as the governor.
