MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Nearly 140,000 Wisconsin residents have selected an insurance plan through the online federal exchanges as of mid-April, and about half signed up in the last seven weeks alone.

The U.S. Department of Health Services released its latest enrollment numbers Thursday. It says just under 140,000 Wisconsin residents selected a plan between Oct. 1 and April 19.

About 71,500 people had signed up as of March 1, meaning another 68,000 signed up in the last seven weeks.

The largest age group -- 32 percent of all signees -- was between the ages of 55 and 64. The most popular coverage option continues to be the silver plan, which covers about 70 percent of medical costs.

Of enrollees who revealed their ethnicity, 86 percent are white and 6 percent are black.
