Woman arrested after breaking into a Vernon County home

PRESS RELEASE--- Vernon County Sheriff John B. Spears reports a home invasion occurred Saturday afternoon, January 11, 2014, at a residence located on Barstad Road, rural Westby, WI in the town of Viroqua. The homeowner called the Sheriff’s Office shortly after 4:00 PM to report that a female entered the residence without permission. The victim was alone at the time and did not answer a knock at the door. It is believed the suspect entered the home once she felt no one was home. The homeowner confronted the suspect and after a short verbal encounter, the suspect left the area in a small, red-colored car, driving north.

The description of the suspect and vehicle were immediately broadcast and Westby Police stopped the vehicle in the city of Westby seven minutes after the incident was reported.

Arrested was Nichole L. Lewis, age 34, of rural Viroqua and she is being held in the Vernon County Jail pending a bail hearing.

It is believed that Nichole Lewis was seeking prescription medications because of previous incidents of which Lewis has been charged. Photographs of Lewis and the vehicle she was operating are being released and the public is urged to contact the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office if they have more information or if there have been other incidents that were not reported.

Assisting the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office with this incident was the Westby Police Department.

The incident remains under investigation by the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office.
