KICKAPOO, Wis. (WEAU) -- A woman has died after a one vehicle crash in the Town of Kickapoo, just east of Readstown, in Vernon County.
Sheriff John B. Spears said it happened Saturday afternoon around 3:30 p.m. on Hwy 14. He said 70-year-old Sharon K. Grim of rural Viola was driving a mid-size SUV down the "Sugar Grove Hill" when she gradually drove off the right side of the highway on a curve to the left. Her SUV went several hundred feet in the ditch line, parallel to the highway.
Spears said the SUV went airborne after hitting the embankment and overturned. Grim was thrown out of the SUV and was pinned between the lower portion of the vehicle and the embankment. The SUV landed upright. It did not appear she was wearing a seatbelt.
The Viola and Readstown Fire Department extricated Grim from the wreckage and she was flown by Med Link Air to Gundersen Health System in La Crosse where she later succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at approximately 5:45 PM.
Assisting the Sheriff’s Office at the scene were the Readstown Fire Department, Readstown Ambulance, Viola Fire Department, Tri-State Ambulance, and Med Link Air.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office and the Vernon County Coroner’s Office. This crash marks the third 2013 traffic fatality in Vernon County.
