BALSAM LAKE, Wis. (WEAU) -- A woman ended up in the hospital with injuries after investigators say she walked into the path of a car.
It happened on Monday night on State Highway 35, north of Centuria. The Polk County Sheriff's Office says Maria Bassi, 33, of rural Balsam Lake had called family minutes before the crash, and that they had become concerned for her well-being. Deputies found that she walked into the path of the car, which was headed south on highway 35. She was thrown to the shoulder on the west side of the highway. Her car was found on the east shoulder of highway 35, and wasn't related to the crash.
Bassi was taken to the hospital. She had surgery for her injuries. The Polk County Sheriff says Bassi's family told his department this morning that she was in critical condition.
BALSAM LAKE, Wis. (POLK COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE NEWS RELEASE) -- On October 28,2013 at 7:03P.M the Polk County Sheriffs Office was notified of a car vs. pedestrian collision on STH 35 north of Centuria in St. Croix Falls Twp.
Deputies investigating the scene found that Maria J. Bassi (33) of rural Balsam Lake WI had walked into the path of a southbound 2012 Kia Soul owned and operated by Rita R. Bibeau (60) of Centuria WI. After impacting the vehicle, Bassi was thrown to the west shoulder of STH 35. Bassi's vehicle; unrelated to the crash was located at the scene on the east shoulder of STH 35.
During the investigation it was discovered that in the minutes prior to the crash being reported, Bassi had made telephone calls to family members which had caused them concerns for her welfare.
Bassi was transported by ambulance to St. Croix Regional Medical Center and was then transported by air ambulance to Regions Hospital where she under went surgery for her injuries.
This crash remains under investigation by the Polk County Sheriff s Office
