NEW INFORMATION: Cause of fire undetermined, no signs of foul play

TOWN OF MEDARY, Wis. (WEAU) -- UPDATE: The La Crosse County Sherif''s Department says the cause of a fire at a mobile home in the Town of Medary will be listed as undetermined.

The Sheriff's Department and State Fire Marshall's Office examined the scene and were not able to find a cause. They say there were no signs of foul play.

58-year-old Nancy Fotland was killed in the fire. Her body was taken to Dane County for an autopsy.

TOWN OF MEDARY, Wis. (WEAU) --One woman is dead, and a mobile home is a total loss after a fire.

Karen Sandvold lives down the street, and says she heard one of her neighbors pounding on her door Friday morning.

"I went down there, and in the mean time he had been able to get the door open, but the smoke was so heavy, he had to close the door back up again, and was very upset,” said Sandvold.

Town of Shelby Assistant Fire Chief Tony Holinka said the call came in just before 12:30 Friday morning.

He said firefighters saw heavy smoke and flames coming out of the northeast corner of trailer 44 at W5445 County Road F in the Town of Medary.

"We had an entry team make entry. There was a lot of smoke and flames they had to fight through, the ceiling had already collapsed in the trailer," said Holinka.

The La Crosse County Medical Examiner says the victim is 58-year-old Nancy Fotland.

Holinka said Fotland was found about 15 feet inside the mobile home.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sandvold said Fotland was a former student of hers.

"We did things together. She was very, very talented. Did lots of things with flower arrangements, and had an eye for color. She was a good friend besides," said Sandvold.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WEAU) -- We now know the name of the woman who was killed in a mobile home fire Friday morning.

On Friday afternoon, the La Crosse County Medical Examiner identified her as Nancy Fotland, 58, of La Crosse. Her body was taken to Dane County for an autopsy.

The fire happened just after midnight Friday in the Town of Medary, which is near La Crosse. Firefighters say Fotland was the only person in the home and no one else was hurt. The home was destroyed in the fire. The cause is under investigation.

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WEAU)--A woman was killed in a fire near La Crosse overnight.

It happened around 12:15 a.m. Friday at a mobile home on W5445 County Road F in the Town of Medary, which is near La Crosse. When crews got there, heavy smoke and flames were seen coming from the home.

The Town of Shelby Fire Department says the woman was the only person in the home and no one else was hurt. The home was destroyed in the fire. The cause is unknown at this time and fire marshals will be back at the scene investigating today.

The woman's name and age have not been released.
