EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU)-- A local energy company is making a donation for people who need help paying their heating bill.

Xcel Energy announced Wednesday it will donate $100,000 to the Keep Wisconsin Warm Fund, which is a non-profit, public/private partnership that provides energy-related assistance for customers.
A spokesman for the fund says this winter, the demand for heating assistance is up more than 40 percent.

"There is a greater need. A couple of things that happened. This winter is quite a bit colder and we have quite a few customers that heat with propane and they've had some challenges and may have converted to electric heat," said Pat Boland, from Xcel Energy.

Xcel says its contribution comes from shareholders and is not included in customer's rates. The funds are distributed to local energy assistance and community action agencies.
