Xcel to start turning off power to customers behind on payments

EAU CLAIRE (WEAU) - This weekend's cold weather could be an issue for people who are behind on their energy bills.

Starting Friday, Xcel Energy could begin to cut-off service for customers who are several months behind on payments. Xcel Energy spokesperson Liz Wolf Green says between November and April the company will not disconnect service to customers who depend on it for heat, but Green says many customers are behind on their payments so their power could be disconnected. She says there are options for help if you are behind on your payments.

Liz Wolf Green with Xcel Energy says "We encourage any of our customers who are behind on paying bills to contact us immediately so we can help them establish a payment plan or get them in touch with energy assistance agencies."

Green says 34,600 customers were more than a month behind in their payments in March.
