Firefighters rescued a man from a burning apartment Thursday morning.
The Menomonie Fire Department says the man was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. It happened around 5 a.m. at a six-unit building on 4th Street in Menomonie.
Firefighters say it was caused by careless use of smoking materials. They say it started in the basement on a sofa. There is heavy smoke and moderate fire damage. Damage is estimated at $25,000.
UW-Stout says four students and a dog needing immediate shelter were taken to Price Commons. Ten students who occupied the five undamaged units have been allowed to return to their apartments. The remaining two students, including the one taken to the hospital, are from Menomonie.
