Colder temperatures bring critters inside

(WEAU) – When you say, the "great outdoors," sometimes its only great for bugs. But, not when fall temperatures swoop in.

"They usually enter the house on the west or the south side. Those are the warmest parts of the house because of the sun hitting it,” said Erin Lafaive, UW Extension.

UW-Extension says a lot of box elder bugs and multicolored Asian lady beetles are showing up right now.

"If you do see them on the side of the house, you can use very dilute soapy mixture of just water and soap, because on contact it will kill the bugs," said Lafaive.

So I decided to venture around WEAU looking for bugs, but luckily none were found.

Now another creature that could be creeping up inside your home could be the fruit fly.

All you need to take care of it is a fork, some sweet vinegar, a cup and some saran wrap.

What you end up doing is just pouring some vinegar into a cup and it creates a sweet aroma for the insect. Then cover a cup with saran wrap and then all you have to do is poke some holes in the top.

What happens is fruit flies crawl inside because of the scent, but end up dying because they can't get out.

Even mice are finding ways inside, but the owner of the Potting Shed has some suggestions other than repellent.

"Fill a 5 gallon pail with water about 2/3rds full and float sunflower seeds along the entire top of the pail and make a ramp with a board for the mice to run up. They'll run up the ramp look in the bucket and assume it’s full of sunflower seeds, jump in and drown,” said Nancy Skelley, owner of the Potting Shed.

Then there's another secret.

"Whatever you cook for dinner, take a little bit of the juice and brush it onto the wooden part of the trap you'll catch mice immediately,” said Skelley.

UW-Extension says bugs only need a 1/8 of an inch to get into a home, and mice need less than an inch. Therefore, make sure to check your screens and any openings you can find in your home.
