Happy Holidays bring unwanted stresses

(WEAU) – Now that its December, it’s time to grab that tinsel, decorate your tree, buy presents and so much more.

But, as we all know, the holidays can bring unwanted stresses.

The holidays can be stressful because we want to please everyone and make it perfect for our families. But when it comes down to it, it’s the time of year that should be spent not worry about whether grandma and grandpa are going to argue or if you are buying the perfect presents. It’s about being with family.

"You are going to experience this wonderful season the way you’re choosing to experience it," said Dr. Mahmoud Ahmed, Psychiatrist with Marshfield Clinic.

For some, the popular saying, "It’s the most wonderful time of year," turns into frenzy of shopping, decorating and the loss of Christmas spirit.

"Christmas is becoming going to the mall, fighting the traffic, buying gifts, but there is more to Christmas time regardless what your faith is,” said Ahmed.

One local psychiatrist with Marshfield Clinic says the stress of it all stems from your childhood.

Even going back home can be an adventure, because some are meeting the in-laws or telling their grandparents once again they’re still single.

"You don't have control of what happened to you yesterday but you have control of how you see the experience of yesterday how you’re going to act and behave tomorrow,” said Ahmed.

One of the biggest stressors of the holiday season is hosting and cooking up your perfect party.

I visited the business Eventful Occasions to find out more.

"I think just people get stressed out because it’s overwhelming to them and they really know where to begin and they end up running around at the last minute, trying to pull things together,” said Angela Welch, Wedding & Event Coordinator of Eventful Occasions.

Setting up a guest list and budget weeks in advance can rid the fear.

Angela says she even finds inspiration through Pinterest.

One way to save on time and stress if you have a lot of people coming over for a holiday party and you want to make cupcakes, all you have to do is bake them a couple days in advance then you can frost them the same day of your party.

"I get my linens ironed. I set the table, get my center pieces ready so that's all done. My goal on the day of that event to just do what I have to absolutely do that day and then be able to relax," said Welch.

“We need to realize life isn't perfect. We need to accept the imperfection of life," Ahmed.

"We worry too much about pleasing everybody else and really people just want to come and celebrate,” said Welch.
