Let's go for a walk: Local district offers indoor walking club

(WEAU) - Is the icy weather interrupting your outdoor workouts? The Chippewa Falls School District offers an indoor walking club for anyone over the age of 18. It’s put on by the Voyagers Community Learning Center, which is helping adults get the exercise they need.

Everywhere you walk, someone has probably stepped once before. At Chippewa Falls Middle school these 72-year old women are stepping toward better health.

"I wanted to keep in practice with walking because I like to walk in the summer and stuff. The roads have been so bad,” said Sharon Doers of Chippewa Falls.

"The way it has been I was more likely to come; because we live on a little side street and it got all icy and they didn't come clear it off too well,” said Joyce Krumenauer of Chippewa Falls.

Sharon Doers and Joyce Krumenauer of Chippewa Falls get in quite a walking workout.

"My time period is roughly a half an hour I like to walk," said Doers.

"A lot of people would enjoy it and it is a good option for times when the weather is bad that you can't be outside,” said Krumenauer.

It’s a concept that Sarah McCaulley with the Voyagers says has been around for years, but only has about 10 participants lacing up their shoes this year.

"They get a walking pass and its only $5 dollars for the whole school year and they have access to the middle school and we give them a map to keep track of their mileage if they want to,” said Sarah McCaulley, Adult Education Coordinator for Voyager’s Community Learning Center.

I brought my walking shoes to see what it's like to walk indoors with the walking club. I made my way through the hallways and whether you go fast or slow, it gets your heart pumping.

"I wear a pedometer all the time to keep track of my steps, write them down," said Doers.

"When I get home from doing this I'm all full of energy I'm all fired up," said Krumenauer.

“It’s just a great opportunity for people to use the building and especially when it’s cold outside and icy it’s just a good way people can still exercise,” said McCaulley.

The club operates on only days the school is open and if you want to walk get ready to wake up early, walkers take to the halls between 6:15 to 7:30am.

"You could get a lot of walking in,” said Krumenauer .

The Eau Claire Area School District says they don’t offer a walking club through the district, but individual schools may opt to do so. Altoona School District has one in the morning, but its says right now there are no participants.

So now's the time to get out there and walk.
