Outweigh holiday fat with holiday fun

(WEAU) - When it’s the holiday season, we often like to indulge in those holiday treats.

But, how can you avoid the guilt this year and jumpstart that New Year’s resolution?

To some exercising can be a chore and out right boring. But, one personal trainer with Gold's Gym says this time of year is the busiest.

"During the winter time is when the gym gets really packed and a lot of people come. All our classes are filled up that's when our personal training skyrocket,” said Kelly Auner, Gold’s Gym Trainer.

Holiday parties and even New Year's resolutions are a big motivator.

"A lot of people are coming in now even before the New Year’s resolution to get their gym membership to try it out and really stick with it," said Auner.

But if lifting weights and running aren't your thing, Auner says lacing up the ice-skates for hockey or figure skating can burn a lot of calories.

"Its high intense interval training so you’re also burning a lot of calories after your workout, compared to someone who’s just running a steady state on the treadmill for the same amount of time," said Auner.

"Hockey and figure skating are right up there. We also have broomball activity down here for people who are interested in ice activities but just aren't confident on the skates just yet," said Stu Taylor, Hobbs Ice Arena Facilities Manager.

I decided to lace up my ice-skates to give it a go.

"You don't have to be an expert ice skater. We do see a lot of people come down and I think it's a combination of trying to find some sort of physical activity in conjunction with winter and holiday season," said Taylor.

But if you can't get to a gym or to ice-skate, doing pushups at home can be a good place to start.

"Pickup cans of soup and curl them or milk jugs filled with water, so there's always things you can do at home especially if you can't get to a gym,” said Auner.
