NEILLSVILLE, Wis. (WEAU) -- A potential threat has led to the closing of Neillsville schools for the day.

District Administrator John Gaier says he received a call from a concerned parent of a high school student just before 6 a.m. Thursday. Her child had received a message on Snapchat, which is an online instant messaging service, of a potential threat. Gaier would not elaborate on exactly what the threat was. He described it as "fairly general," and said that it seems to be isolated to the school. Gaier believes one other student was involved, but that a couple students may have known about it. He says there was also a Facebook conversation on who else may have seen it. He is not sure when the original message on Snapchat was sent. The school district ended up with copies of the messages, which were forwarded to the Neillsville Police Department. It is investigating.

The Neillsville School District has K-12 in one complex, which is closed for the day. Gaier says the district has not sent a message to parents about the closing. He says he has dealt with threats during his 18 years with the district, but believes this is the first he's seen directed at the schools through social media.
