Fun in the sun: Spring break without breaking the bank

(WEAU) - This week, UW Eau Claire students are enjoying their spring break and next week, even more students across the Chippewa Valley will have some time off. But what do you do with your time, besides relax?

"I like working and Florida would cost a lot of money to go down there," said Kaylene Flaherty, Junior UWEC student.

For junior UW Eau Claire student, Kaylene Flaherty spring break will be spent at home this year.

"It would have set me back too much so I decided to stay and get the hours," said Flaherty

This year weather is a bit different.

"A bunch of my friends went floating last year, like floating down the river," said Flaherty.

But Michelle Dingwall with the Visitor Center in Menomonie says there's always something to do.

"I think people are sometimes looking for something different to do and so that's when we encourage them to visit the parks even if's not ideal hiking weather,” said Dingwall.

Families can even enjoy the Children's Museum.

"The Children's Museum in downtown Eau Claire is one of our favorite places to take visitors when come and just my family on a Saturday when were not busy,” said Dingwall.

While there's plenty places you can go here in Wisconsin, there's always Action City.

"Our spring break goes from anywhere to four weeks to 7 weeks depending on school calendars. We go to about 110 mile radius,” said Benny Anderson, General Manager of Action City.

Anderson says the snow has affected outdoor activities, like mini-golf.

"Last year we would have shoveled mini golf about 4 weeks ago, we usually try to be up by March 1st,” Anderson.

Yet if you want to go outside, try the historic Yellowstone Trail.

"It started in 1912, and they created this trail across the state to really see all the great communities all along highway 29. Take a little road trip and see what you can come up with,” said Dingwall.
