Hunters and wives are ready for widow weekend

(WEAU) – According to the DNR, hundreds of thousands of Wisconsinites have been anxiously awaiting the nine day gun deer season, which starts on November 17th.

Some women are looking forward to having some girl time, while their husbands hunt, but not all of them.

For the past 5 years, Stephanie has looked forward to deer hunting season because her husband leaves and it’s a weekend with the girls.

“The house to myself, also I like to go out to shop, go get my hair done, and do all the womanly stuff I can't do so much when he's around,” said shopper, Stephanie Zank.

But for the past 25 years Lisa has looked forward to hunting deer in Mondovi.

"I had two older brothers I was the youngest, they were always like you can't come with us you're a girl and I'm like no I want to come," said Lisa Remington-Lamb of Mondovi.

It’s a tradition that both women love.

"I don't enjoy getting up at 5 in the morning and going into the woods. I’d rather be somewhere warm, and I don't shoot Bambi’s,” said Zank.

Lisa says that she likes hunting in areas in Mondovi. She says it takes some skill to be a hunter, and usually female hunters are better than men because they have a lot more patience.

According to the 2012 DNR annual report, last year almost 300 females learned to hunt and in 2012 the number is almost 450.

Lisa says preparing your clothes and rifles takes a lot of work.

"It’s cool to see everybody, all the families getting together you know where they are going to go and whose going where and who’s going with you,” said Remington-Lamb.

Meanwhile Stephanie and other hunter wives shop til they drop at Oakwood Mall. They all search for sales that are usually going on.

"They kind of catch onto that weekend, we get the sales and pretty packed, but it’s worth it. Get a lot of stuff for cheap,” said Zank.

But nothing beats the memories and stories from the season..

"It’s always just about coming back and telling stories what you saw, what you got, what you missed,” said Remington-Lamb.

"There's always some story, you know, creeping up on the deer and doing the ninja moves to get the deer,” said Zank.
