Winter storm blasts Chippewa Valley

(WEAU) – Snowflake after snowflake fell in the Chippewa Valley, leaving a lot of main roads covered with snow, making conditions extremely slippery.

Student Transit says a number of Eau Claire Area School District buses were about 30-45 minutes late.

Snowblowers and snowplows were out in full force early as people tried to get a quick plow in before work.

"My lovely wife woke me up and said hey Jim guess what you get to do. I said no I'm not doing that and then I got up and did it like I always do,” said James Erdman of Eau Claire.

But traveling on slippery roads left some to stay home from work, like one truck driver who got up early to shovel.

"I do it by the garage and stuff first and then I get the snow blower out. Just get it away from the house a little bit," said Mike Gullerud of Eau Claire.

"All roads are really bad in the northwest region, particularly from Eau Claire south and east. We've been dealing with a lot of highway issues; a lot of semis off and vehicles off. We really encourage people to re-adjust their travel," said Captain Jeffrey Frenette of the Wisconsin State Patrol.

While Frenette recommends not traveling, if you do in fact have to get in your car, and go on the roads, he says you should add a little bit of extra time because of slippery conditions.

The Eau Claire Streets Department says they started plowing the slippery roads at 2:30am. They say they can't plow neighborhoods until it stops.

"The city does a great job but they'll put a bank up two feet in front of my driveway. I've got a suburban and I can drive over it if I want to. I did that once, the problem is, then you have a perpetual hump of ice there forever," said Erdman.

"Plow operators and our people and rec operators need to do some cleanup. Less traffic out there, it’ll be a little easier for us to do that. But again monitor the conditions, if you have to go somewhere be prepared,” said Frenette.

"I just hope it keeps snowing," said Gullerud.
