Morning Medical Moment – Female Focus
Clothes can come one size fits all, but that's not what women need when it comes to fitness, especially in the case of illness. Posted: 6:00 AM Feb 19, 2008 |

A little bit of respect, self respect, has these women working out.
They make it look easy, and that's a big deal considering most have osteoarthritis or osteoporosis.
“I track it every year, and you could see the disintegration over the years,” says Female Focus Participant Patti Kiernan.
But Patti Kiernan, an energetic 60-year-old, is fighting back, with exercise.
"They could see in the x-ray exactly how I've improved with my bone density because of this class."
The "Female Focus Program" at Cooper Fitness Center in Dallas is tailored to women with arthritis, cancer, fibromyalgia, osteoporosis. It teaches them how to exercise based on their individual needs.
“There should've never been any generic program, period, in the fitness field because we are all different and unique. You can hear all day about what the benefits are by doing activity, but you actually have to know what to do to get those benefits,” says Senior Fitness Trainer Colette Cole.
The Female Focus is not about sitting at a piece of equipment pushing and pulling. It's about functional movement and trunk stability that prepares these women for daily life.
"Say you're walking down the sidewalk and hit a crack in the sidewalk, people that don't go through training like this might just fall down and break their wrist or something. But it teaches you balance, balance, balance,” says Kiernan.
Patti wants healthy bones, so she works out twice a week during the month long program. And when it ends, she joins again.
"You start out at your level, at your speed, your pace. Before you know it, you're addicted."
