With Memorial Day just around the corner, pools across the country are getting ready to open.

But before you go in the water, CDC officials have an important warning for swimmers.
There were more cases of recreational water illness reported last year than ever before, according to CDC data.

Recreational water illness is caused by the chlorine-resistant parasite crypto, which is found in the stool of infected people or animals.

Researchers say from 2004 to 2007 the number of crypto outbreaks linked to swimming pools more than doubled.

Doctors warn swimmers to avoid swallowing water.

And in other medical news…
Celery may be more than a tasty veggie snack!
New research indicates a compound in celery may help fight diseases like Alzheimer’s.

The data are still preliminary, and the researchers used mice as their test subjects.

During the study the mice were fed water that contained luteolin, an anti- inflammatory compound found in celery.

The compound appeared to lower levels of inflammatory molecules in the blood, as well as an area of the brain linked to diseases like Alzheimer’s.

Researchers say luteolin has potential as a treatment for inflammatory brain conditions.
