Past studies have shown African Americans are more likely to die from certain cancers. Now experts have found biological factors may be to blame.

Researchers at Loyola University followed more than 19,000 cancer patients who were enrolled in 35 clinical trials.

They all had the same access to care and researchers accounted for each patient’s socio- economic background.

They found African Americans were significantly more likely to die from breast, ovarian and prostate cancer than the other clinical trial participants.

In other health news, after massive food recalls involving peanut butter, tomatoes, jalapeño peppers, beef, and even cookie dough, the government is announcing ways it will strengthen food safety standards.

Earlier this year, the Obama Administration established a food safety panel. That panel came up with new rules regarding safe handling of foods like tomatoes, leafy greens, meat and eggs.

The FDA and agriculture department will also develop better tracing systems. That’s so the source of bacterial outbreaks can be pinpointed more easily.

The agency that inspects meat will also increase its sampling of ground beef products.
