After a record 140 soldiers committed suicide last year a new army program will take a closer look at how troops handle stress. All active-duty and reserve soldiers will be asked to take an online survey to assess their resiliency, and will ask questions about how soldiers are feeling emotionally, spiritually and socially.
Commanders will not know how their soldiers score on the test. Army leaders say it's necessary to teach soldiers adequate coping skills. The comprehensive soldier fitness program will be launched in October.
UCLA researchers are continuing studies on wearable artificial kidney dialysis kits.
Rather than being hooked up to bulky dialysis machines, patients would wear a mini- dialysis kit that looks much like a belt, all day, every day.
The device weighs about 10 pounds, but allows patients to move around and go on with their daily activities. Although the preliminary studies on the wearable artificial kidney are promising, researchers say the device is a long way from mainstream treatment.
