MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Several Assembly Democrats are backing a national resolution to bring awareness to women's reproductive rights.
Madison Reps. Terese Berceau, Chris Taylor and Kelda Helen Roys held a news conference Monday in the Capitol to announce they've submitted a joint resolution to proclaim January 22-28 as Reproductive Rights Awareness Week.
Lawmakers say recent state legislation hurts low income women's access to health care services. They also expressed disappointment over a bill that makes teaching about contraception optional in sex education curriculum. The Senate passed the bill and it now waits for a vote in the Assembly.
The reproductive rights resolution is being introduced in 14 other states including Alaska, Florida and Ohio.
