Diabetes patients need to keep an eye on their cholesterol, not only for their heart health, but also as a way to prevent cancer.
Researchers in Hong Kong studied over 6,000 diabetes patients who were not taking statin drugs to control their cholesterol.
They found those with very low, or very high cholesterol had a higher risk for cancer.
Those with low cholesterol had an increased risk for cancers of the digestive organs; those with very high cholesterol had an increased risk for bone, skin and breast cancer.
Researchers say future studies need to adjust for other risk factors for cancer, like lifestyle and socio-economic status.

And in other medical news...
A new study finds pregnant women who experience extreme stress like a natural disaster or terrorist threat are more likely to have children that develop schizophrenia.
Researchers at NYU studied the health of over 88,000 children born in Jerusalem between 1964 and 1976.
They found the children of women who were in their second month of pregnancy at the height of the Arab-Israeli war in June of 1967 had higher rates of schizophrenia over the next 21 to 33 years.
And gender matters, female children were four times more likely to be affected by this mental illness compared to the general population, while males were just under two times more likely.
