MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The Wisconsin National Guard has tested an unmanned surveillance drone.

Guard officials say an RQ-7 Shadow 200 took off from Volk Field on Wednesday. The flight was designed to verify the drone's radio frequency was compatible with the Guard's equipment and prepare for an air controller exercise. The drone was in the air for about 10 minutes.

The drone can reach heights of about 15,000 feet. It's smaller than the more well-known Predator and carries a camera for reconnaissance.

The Guard plans to build an $8 million drone base at Volk Field. Designs are expected to be finished by October. Construction could begin in December 2011.
