MAYVILLE, Wis. (AP) -- Hundreds gathered this weekend to pay their final respects to a 24-year-old Mayville soldier killed in Afghanistan.

First Lt. David Johnson was killed in action Jan. 25. Visitation was Saturday and Sunday at Mayville High School gymnasium.

During a memorial service Sunday, his sister Emily Johnson said he always told her not to worry about him. She said she always looked up to him and he made her life more exciting.

Johnson's combat boots with thick, black soot on the toes sat on a table that also displayed other memorabilia of the soldier.

The military also presented Johnson's Bronze Star and Purple Heart medals to his father, Andrew Johnson.

Johnson was a 2006 graduate of Mayville High School.
