Wis. DNR bans outdoor burning in north woods

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The state Department of Natural Resources plans to outlaw outdoor burning in far northwestern Wisconsin out of fears a spark might ignite a raging wildfire.

Severe storms last summer felled hundreds of thousands of trees across the region. The DNR, the National Guard and loggers have been working to clear the timber, but now the spring fire season has begun and DNR officials fear a fire could easily tear through timber still on the ground and engulf the area.

The DNR announced Wednesday it will ban burning anything outside in portions of southwestern Douglas, northwestern Washburn, northern Burnett and northwestern Polk counties starting Friday. That means people won't be allowed to build campfires, smoke outside or light fireworks.
