(WEAU) - A man is in critical condition after a van he was in exploded next to a Kwik Trip store.

The Town of Campbell Police Department, near La Crosse, says the explosion happened Sunday night around 10 p.m. The fire started to spread to the building but crews were able to quickly put out the flames.

The driver, John Bubbers, was flown to a hospital in Madison with third degree burns. The passenger had non-life threatening injuries.

Investigators say the explosion happened when someone in the van lit a cigarette, igniting gas from an LP cylinder that was taken to the store to be exchanged.
