Audit finds reasons for drops in crime funds

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- A new audit finds several explanations for a drop in funding for crime victims services programs run by the state Department of Justice.

The Legislative Audit Bureau report released Wednesday looked at why money received from surcharges assessed to people convicted of crimes has dropped from $5.9 million in 2008 to $5.7 million in 2010, despite a $7 increase in the surcharge.

The audit found that some of the surcharge money was not properly deposited.

It also found that available money may be down because of a drop in convictions in which the surcharge is owed.

Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen says in response that the audit supports the need to find a more stable funding source for the crime victim programs that benefit from the surcharge.
