Send DNR hunter safety graduates top 1 million

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says more than 1 million people have graduated from its hunter safety program.

The program started in Dunn County in 1967. The basic course has a minimum of 10 hours of instruction, which includes demonstrations and practical exercises. Students learn how hunting accidents are caused and how they can be prevented.

More than 25,000 students completed the hunter safety program in 2011. DNR hunter education administrator Jon King says the course it taught by volunteer instructors who want to pass on their passion for hunting. King says the instructors can be credited for zero fatalities during the 2010 and 2011 gun-deer seasons.

In 2011, there were 924 classes offered by 3,802 volunteer instructors. The DNR also has an online course and features bilingual instructors.
