La Crosse Promise goes public

LA CROSSE, Wis (WEAU)-
An organization called the La Crosse Promise came out publicly today.
It announced a two phase idea to help transform education after high school and the La Crosse community.

The foundation is made up of school and business professionals from La Crosse and it’s meant to help the economy.

The La Crosse Promise foundation spent 4 years preparing for today's big announcement of Future Centers.

Future Centers will consist of advisers that will help high school students with their goals after high school.

A Future Center will be placed in every high school in the La Crosse District, including private schools.

The President of La Crosse promise Ralph Heath, says school counselors can only do so much and the centers will help fill the gaps.

“Counselors don’t have the time to delegate to career counseling. Sad but true. This will fill the void,” said Heath.

Future Centers will be in place by this fall. They will use vacant rooms in the high schools to set up counseling. They will focus on things like; filling out FASA, college paperwork, finding scholarships and applying to them, and encouraging them to further their education after high school.

The Future Centers are just phase 1 of La Crosse Promise's goal.

“We've now completed the cost of phase 1 the future centers and now were working on phase 2," said Heath.

Phase 2 is still just an idea but La Crosse Promise wants to create their own scholarship fund for students that will live here after college.

“We will pay the remaining amount of tuition costs in exchange of families moving to the city of la Crosse and helping to rebuild the community," said Heath.

Phase 2 will not be implemented until La Crosse Promise feels that they have enough money donated to kick off the scholarship with no problems.

Former La Crosse District Superintendent Jerry Kember says that Phase 2 could take years before it's set in place.
