BREAKING NEWS: Man hit while crossing the interstate

(WEAU) - We now know the name of the man who was hit by a driver while crossing the interstate in Eau Claire on foot.

Troopers say 19-year-old Sarah Courtney of Milwaukee was driving her car eastbound on I-94 in the left lane. She saw a man walking across her lane. She says she applied her brakes and swerved right, but was unable to avoid hitting 52-year-old John Spanjers of Menomonie. Courtney did stop at the scene.

Spanjers was hit in the leg. He rolled into the median and remained conscious throughout the incident. His injuries were not life-threatening. The man says he had made arrangements for a ride, but decided to start walking and meet the car that was coming for him along the way. The crash remains under investigation.

The crash happened about 4 p.m. Monday. It shut down one lane of westbound I-94 near the North Crossing for a little more than a half hour.

As a reminder, troopers say no pedestrian or person riding a bicycle or other non-motorized vehicle and no person operating a moped or motor bicycle may go upon an expressway or freeway. Signs are
erected at each on-ramp to the interstate prohibiting such use.
