MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- A committee working to recall a northern Wisconsin senator has suspended its efforts.

Shirl LaBarre of Hayward registered a committee to recall Sen. Bob Jauch, a Poplar Democrat, to punish him for opposing a bill that would have jumpstarted an iron mine south of Ashland.

The committee has until May 18 to collect the 15,720 signatures it would need to force Jauch into an election. Citizens for Responsible Government Network, which works to elect conservative candidates, has been helping the committee.

The group issued a statement on the committee's behalf Friday saying the recall has been suspended. CRG Network Field Operations Director Orville Seymer says people are focused on recalls involving Republican Gov. Scott Walker and volunteers are spread thin.

He says the effort could resume later this summer.

BELOW IS A STATEMENT FROM SEN. JAUCH:
The pretend recall effort against me funded by a Milwaukee fringe group failed because they and the few extremists who support them are out of touch with the citizens of northern Wisconsin.

The intimidating tactics of this runaway group to try to influence my effort to seek responsible legislation didn’t work and has been soundly rejected by the public.

No matter how they try to spin their decision they couldn’t get sufficient signatures to have a recall election. The citizens of the north will not be conned by deceptive and poisonous rhetoric that is spewed by individuals who seek domination over public officials and anyone else who happen to disagree with them.

Frankly, northern Wisconsin residents are fed up with the vengeful political behavior of those who gleefully try to “divide and conquer” our citizens to impose their ideological will.

These residents value responsible leadership over resentful rhetoric. They are not going to tolerate the behavior of those whose radical political agenda is severely damaging the state we know and love.

I am proud to serve northern Wisconsin. For the past several weeks I have been encouraged by the broad based regional support for my efforts to represent the public interest of the north and I will continue to passionately work for commonsense solutions to the complicated challenges that confront us.
