I agree with Rick, the police act as if we live in the inner city! They overreact and the media overdramatizes it all. Jon, list some situations. Nothing, that's what I thought.

I agree! You can't turn a corner with out seeing Menomonie PD. Menomonie is a small town that could have half the amount of police officers they have.

To anon and Hippie: there is a very good reason and one that most people will appreciate. They also have to take that into account when citing statistics, they are only as good as thier data. When someone is arrested for impaired driving, initially it doesn't matter what the impairment is from. A blood sample is taken and sent off to the state lab. Testing for alcohol is way cheaper and much, much faster that is done first. So if the person is over the alcohol limit, and there are no serious issues with the case, they charge the alcohol impairment and don't test the sample further. If they test under the level for alcohol, they send it off to another part of the lab and test it for drugs. This takes months (see Chip River boat crash) and costs a ton. LE/DAs are being frugal and efficient, nothing more. The truth is a very high percentage of impaired drivers have multiple impairing substances in their system at the same time, you for example. If every sample was tested for drugs, it would back the system up beyond bad. So to say impaired drivers are not drug impaired is just totally false. And you are just as bad on weed, just differently. It's all OK man....but that's a different topic.

And who at the federal level pushed swelling the ranks? You know who.

Then they should also come up a "field sobriety test" for prescription drugs. I suppose that you are not aware that prescription drug abuse is the number one drug problem in the U.S. right now. And as you say public safety is number one concern. The failed drug war is a very major concern for public safety. As long as there are drug cartels willing to kill or injure to get their drugs sold then there will always be a safety threat to U.S. citizens. Legalize cannabis and you take away a major cash cow for the cartels. Would you rather have someone stoned driving or have a few gang members invading your child's school and coercing them into the drug trade?

Just playing the devils advocate here...but if driving stoned were as bad as driving drunk, why aren't there as many stories about stoned drivers as there are about drunk drivers?
Not that I'm defending stoned driving, I'm not...but as someone who has been stoned and been drunk (not necessarily together...hahahaha) I can tell you that I would feel much safer driving stoned than driving drunk...not that I do either (I don't drive when I'm impaired) however I know the difference in being stoned and drunk. The difference is HUGE. If you don't know that, you should try it...otherwise you really shouldn't have an opinion on what it is like to be stoned.

Then why are there so many drunk drivers on the road? Developing a field sobriety test has done nothing to curb drunk driving. Taking their driver's liscence away hasn't stopped them from driving drunk. The public has not been and never will be kept safe from drunk drivers. People are going to do what they want whether it's legal or not.

Ahhhh, I don't think your post makes sense.

I don't think anyone argues the impared driver issue. Impared is impared whether it is driving or coming into work.

you would be a public servant it doesnt matter if you dont like the person or not it is a obligation to save and or assist that person if it is needed.

Before they can legalize it, they must first develop some kind of "field sobriety test" to use on suspected impaired drivers. Driving stoned is just as bad as driving drunk! So yammer all you want about the tax revenues and drug cartels, public safety should still be the number 1 concern!!

You should do a little research on this. There are 17 states with medical cannabis laws. So yes it is happening elsewhere.

Eric, The population of the county has dramatically increased since the 80's, and the deputy force is not much if any higher.

Rick, I wish you weren't so ignorant. Have you seen what Chippewa County Deputies have been involved with lately. Learn about things before you say such ignorant things. Thanks!

They look at emergency services first? Not sure where you got that from.
