MILWAUKEE (AP) -- A Milwaukee County sheriff's deputy has been killed in a traffic collision, the first deputy to die in the line of duty since 2000.
Authorities say Deputy Sergio Aleman was traveling near downtown Milwaukee early Tuesday afternoon when the collision occurred. Aleman was pronounced dead at a hospital.
The deputy was in a sheriff's pickup truck that provides assistance to disabled vehicles.
Sheriff David Clarke was in California for a Homeland Security training seminar. The department said he was cutting his trip short to return to Milwaukee.
The sheriff's office hasn't released many details about the crash, saying its initial concern is for Aleman's family.
The last Milwaukee County deputies to die in the line of duty were two deputies killed when their helicopter crashed in 2000.
