APPLETON, Wis. (AP) -- Appleton police say an officer has shot and killed a man who was armed with a handgun.

Police say Sgt. Greg Pieper responded Friday night to a report of illegal fireworks in a neighborhood near downtown. When he arrived he radioed that a man had a gun at the house, and Pieper asked for backup.

Police Chief Pete Helein says the 61-year-old man refused Pieper's order to drop his weapon and Pieper opened fire. The man died at the scene.

Pieper wasn't hurt. He has been placed on administrative leave while the Green Bay police department investigates.

Helein held a news conference Saturday afternoon about the shooting. The chief read from prepared statements and did not take questions.
