A state health offical Wednesday said the West Nile virus did not directly cause the death of an elderly Wisconsin Rapids man. But, the man's family says because he had contracted the virus , it did contribute to his death.
Mark Fuehrer, 86, died Monday in a Wisconisn Rapids hospital. But the health official, who deals with the virus, said little more can be revealed about his death.
Three people have been confirmed to have died of the disease in the state, all taking place in 2002.
This year there are eight confirmed cases of West Nile virus, which is spread by mosquitos, with an additional case in Wood County, and single cases in Chippewa, Rock, Iowa, Portage, Polk and Outagamie counties.
