La Crosse County is getting ready to start a $29.5 million dollar jail expansion.
The expansion will replace a vacant building and parking lot next to the current jail. The addition will add 108 beds and 15,000 square feet of remodeled space to the current building. The new building will also provide space for Wisconsin Probation and Parole to create a better working relationship.
"This is the best that it's going to get,” says County Board Chair Steve Doyle. “We looked at all the options, tried to make every economization measure we could. This is as far down as we could get that price. It's time to take some action."
Doyle says it will likely take two years for the addition to be finished.
