M.I.L.C. Controversy Continues

Republican and Democratic leaders battled in Washington yesterday, over which party is more committed to dairy farmers.

Republican National Committee Chairman Ed Gillespie asked his Democratic counterpart, Terry McAuliffe, to stop running a Wisconsin ad that claims Republicans plan to eliminate the Milk Income Loss Contract.

Gillespie wrote to McAuliffe that, in addition to signing the bill that created the program, President Bush made a pledge while campaigning in Wausau, that he will work with Congress to renew the program.

McAuliffe says Republicans blocked an effort to include an extension for the program in last week's disaster relief bill.

He says that if Congress continues not to act, the program will expire in a year.
