A former Eau Claire man has been charged with multiple counts of theft by fraud and consumer protection violations.

Twenty-eight-year-old Matthew D. Wiley, now of Minneapolis, made his initial appearance in Eau Claire County Court for running a work-at-home scam called "Home Stuffers."

Sheriff's officials say from March of 2003 to July of this year, Wiley used fliers and ads to solicit a $25 deposit from area residents for information about working at home stuffing envelopes.

Wiley later admitted to investigators that none of the residents had stuffed envelopes or received the guaranteed compensation.

If convicted, Wiley could face a maximum seven and a half years in prison, three years in the county jail, and fines up to $115,000.

His next appearance is scheduled for Nov. 1.
