According to a new federal report, 80 percent of motorists nationwide are wearing seatbelts, compared to 72 percent in Wisconsin.

State patrol says the number is up almost three percent from last year, and means more people realize the importance of wearing a seatbelt.

"You can get by without wearing your seatbelt because there is not one of us everywhere, law enforcement," says Lt. Jeff Lorentz. "But you'll never get by laws of physics that's 100 percent of the time. If your seatbelts not on and you get involved in the crash, you're going to continue with the momentum."

As compared to this time last year, there are 81 fewer fatalities on Wisconsin roads.

Lieutenant Lorentz also says that in half of fatal crashes, seatbelts could have prevented death.
