Sending to Soldiers

A spokesman for the Wisconsin National Guard is asking residents to stop collection drives for unsolicited mail.

Only packages and letters sent to a specific soldier at a specific address will reach its destination.

"We cannot provide names and addresses of service members because we can't violate the privacy and security of those men and women in uniform or their families," says Lt. Col. Tim Donovan.

If residents don't have a friend or family member serving, Lt. Col. Donovan says there are other ways to help, like volunteering time with families who have a loved one overseas, or making monetary donations to help families send care packages.

The Department of Defense also has ideas to support the troops on their Web site at www.defendamerica.mil.
