CONSUMER ALERT: Dodge Recall

Consumer Alert

Federal safety regulators have asked Daimler-Chrysler to recall 600,000 Dodge Durango and Dakota trucks because because the wheels could fall off.

A Chrysler spokesman says the vehicles have not been recalled yet, and that the company plans to respond to the government request by next week.

The investigation involves Durango sport utility vehicles and Dakota pickup trucks that were made from 2000 through 2003.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration made the recommendation after investigating several crashes.

The Chrysler spokesman says the company recognizes there is a problem with with the upper ball joints, but he was quoted as saying, "We do not think it raises to the level of a safety defect."
