State Republicans Push to Require Photo ID for All Voters

Tuesday's election brought out a record number of Wisconsin voters, and while most voters cast their ballot with ease, state Republicans say irregularities in voter registration and a number of reported cases of fraud are reasons to re-evaluate the state's voter laws.

Republicans announced today that they'd like to require all voters bring a photo ID to the polls to vote. They say the requirement would help confirm the eligibility of voters and cut back on fraud.

Democrats, however, say such an effort by Republicans would likely require a specific, state-issued voter identification card that would have to be renewed every time a person moved, discouraging voters and driving down turnout.

Regardless of what form any ID requirement may take, state Republicans say they'll at least bring it up for discussion this next legislative session.
