Just days into the deer hunt, donated venison is showing up at food pantries that help the needy in Wisconsin.
In Marshfield, Hewitt Meat Processing is accepting up to 70 donated deer carcasses which will become venison burger for the St. Vincent de Paul food pantry.
Wood County contributes $50 per deer for processing, and Hewitt and other businesses donate the rest.
The statewide deer donation is considered a win-win situation, giving hunters a way to donate an extra deer or a deer he or she doesn't want, while providing meat for the needy
