Governor Doyle wants state-licensed day care providers rated on their quality.

The governor wants to post the ratings on the Internet to help parents choose the right day care provider for their children. Doyle would link 300 million dollars in annual day care subsidies to a five-star rating system. The better a center scores, the more aid it gets.

As many as 167-thousand children under 12 are in day care at some point during the day. That can include small, family-run centers that can care for up to eight kids -- or bigger facilities.

Doyle is to include the proposal in his 'state of the state' speech tonight.

If the Legislature approves, the rating system would start next year.
