Governor Doyle is proposing to raise the state's hunting and fishing fees to help pay for 30 new conservation wardens and boost conservation efforts.

The governor told the La Crosse Tribune he also wants to fully fund the state's stewardship fund, which has paid for acquisition of about 42,000 acres of conservation land since he took office in 2003.

Under Doyle's proposal, deer hunting licenses would increase from 20 to 32 dollars each. And fishing licenses would go up from 17 to 20 dollars.

Overall, the Department of Natural Resources budget would grow by 5% from 492 million dollars for the current fiscal year to 510 million dollars and 517 million dollars for the next two years.
