Wisconsin Republican Senate Delays Minimum Wage Increase

Republicans in the state Senate moved Tuesday to delay an increase in the state's minimum wage.

The Republican-controlled chamber voted 19-to-12 to send a bill that opposes the increase back to a Senate committee.

By not voting on the bill itself, senators have avoided a veto by Democratic Governor Jim Doyle.

Republicans say an increase would raise business costs and make the state less competitive.

Doyle backs a minimum wage raise across Wisconsin to $6.50 an hour from the current $5.15.

If the Legislature continues to avoid a vote, the increase will take effect by administrative rule in December 2006.
