Correctional officers and sergeants rallied outside of the facilities they work at, Wednesday, including the Stanley Correctional Institution and the Chippewa Valley Treatment Facility.

Local union representative say they want to draw attention to overcrowding, an increase in high-risk prisoners in the system, and a failure to recruit and train high quality staff.

Kevin Semanko, Local 122 Vice President, says overcrowding and understaffing led to the Arizona hostage situation in 2003, and they don't want security to be jeopardized in Wisconsin because of those issues.

Department of Corrections spokesman Bill Clausius says state officials realize there is overcrowding in Wisconsin prisons, but believe there is adequate security. He says they've tried to alleviate the problem by opening new facilities and contracting inmates to jails.
