The music is lively and toe-tapping. The cause is to benefit other organizations.

For the last six years, the Chippewa Valley Ragtime Society, brings in national ragtime talent for the public to hear, and for the community to benefit from the profits.

The money from concerts, and this year's weekend festival in January, is a local soup kitchen.

The community table was the first beneficiary in 2000, then a check was presented in the amount of $1,800.

Wednesday, a donation totaling seven times that amount, about $13,000 was handed over.

Festival organizer Jim Radloff says there are ragtime festivals all over the country, but this one is the only benefit festival.

Eau Claire's annual ragtime festival has provided $46,000 to a cycle of five Chippewa valley non-profit groups.

The community table will use the money to help give a hot meal to about 80 people each day.
